From Huntershill Village in Scotland has come a 2011 calendar published by John S. L. Watson,
haulage contractors.
The Tomas Muir Heritage Trail is illustrated on the calendar with photos by Jimmy Watson showing
places associated with the early life of the Scottish martyr. Attention is paid to Campsie. During the
1870s many of the Campsie parish print workers supported Thomas Muir in his campaign to
establish democracy in Scotland. Also on the trail – Kirkintilloch whose weavers and inhabitants
supported Muir. Huntershill Village is at 100-102 Crowhill Road, Bishopbriggs, Glasgow G64 1RP.
The Hunters Hill Historical Society is 50 years of age this year.
At the time of the municipal centenary an exhibition of historical items, on loan, was held at the
Towen Hall from Friday 17 March to Thursday 30 March. The museum has the catalogue of that
exhibition.
On Thursday, 27 July 1961 a public meeting was held at the Town Hall with the mayor Ald. K. Bell in
the chair to consider the formation of an historical society. More than 60 people attended and the
society was formed. President was the Town Clerk, R. D. Stuckey, secretary Miss M Marshall and
treasurer Mrs. W. Oliver. The annul sub was ten shillings with one pond for a family. Meeting were
well attended with numbers of 61, 81, and 48 being recorded.
The society raised money with the idea of buying a cottage for a folk museum but the real estate
boom defeated them. In 1964 they approached council, handed over 500 pounds and the present
museum was built adjoining the Town Hall, being officially opened on 15 April 1967.
The Society hopes to celebrate its Golden Jubilee with a luncheon this year.
